Perturbation theory as a new analytical approach to the MEG forward problem for realistic volume conductor modeling of the head

چکیده
Analytical solutions to the magnetic forward problem are known only for special volume conductors [1, 2, 3], which are insufficient to describe detailed head shapes. The forward calculation for a realistic volume conductor can so far only be solved by numerical algorithms, such as the boundary element method (BEM) [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9], which pose severe problems for superficial sources due to the discretization of the volume conductor surface. Here, we present an analytical approach using perturbation theory where we exploit the fact that for realistic head shapes the deviation of the inner skull from a spherical approximation is small compared to its radius.

Finite Element Modeling of a Realistic Head Based on Medical Images
Accurate modeling of head volume conductor plays an important role in EEG/MEG forward and inverse problems. The finite element (FE) modeling of realistic head is a key issue for the finite element analysis of brain electromagnetic field. Various FE modeling methods have been investigated and developed recently to model the realistic head volume conductor, but these methods either use approximat...

The magnetic field induced by a current dipole situated in a realistic volume conductor cannot be computed exactly. Here, we derive approximate analytical solutions based on the fact that in magnetoencephalography the deviation of the volume conductor ~i.e., the head! from a spherical approximation is small. We present an explicit integral form which allows to calculate the nth order Taylor exp...
متن کاملValidation and Application of Realistic Head Modelling to MEG.
While realistic head modelling is nowadays frequently applied in EEG source analysis, it is only rarely used in the evaluation of MEG measurements. One reason is the lower dependency of MEG signals on the volume conductor geometry. However, a simultaneous evaluation of EEG and MEG is highly desirable for an accurate source reconstruction when considering the complementary strengths of these two...
متن کاملA guideline for head volume conductor modeling in EEG and MEG
For accurate EEG/MEG source analysis it is necessary to model the head volume conductor as realistic as possible. This includes the distinction of the different conductive compartments in the human head. In this study, we investigated the influence of modeling/not modeling the conductive compartments skull spongiosa, skull compacta, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), gray matter, and white matter and o...

Electroand magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG)-based source reconstruction of cerebral activity (the EEG/MEG inverse problem) is an important tool both in clinical practice and research and in cognitive neuroscience. Methods for solving the inverse problem are based on solutions to the corresponding forward problem, i.e., simulation of EEG/MEG fields for a given primary source in the brain with a ...
